Hi jem:

Yes - your dependents are eligible for benefits up to a maximum equalling 50% of your monthly payment. (For people that have had intermittent work histories, it is sometimes less than 50%.)

And, Yes they will receive back pay. You do have to go in person to apply. I am surprised they didn't notify you sooner, and that they are holding your back pay because of that.

So - Hurry, Hurry, Hurry into your local office and get their application taken care of. What a nice surprise for you.

Hi Pati, wow, I wish I had known sooner! My husband is skeptical and worried about overpayment. Can a person be denied benefits for their children? My appt is Feb 14th.  How long do you think it could take to receive the backpay?

Hi jem:

Like I said, it is possible for the amount to be less than 50%. And, there are some rare cases that the work history has been so sporadic, it doesn't support dependent benefits, but that is very rare.

It is so hard to say how long the backpay will take. That is something that has so many variables I hate to even try and predict.

I do hope, however, that it is soon.

My local office won't let me sign my kids up until I get my award letter!  Is that normal?

Thanks and God bless!

I believe I had to wait until I had my Notice of Award letter before I could do the auxiliary benefit sign up, too.

I called the 800 number made an appointment and they told me all the things I would need to bring to sign up for auxiliary benefits.

Yes, SB. I really do imagine you each time, sitting cross legged with a headdress and staff, loud but soft voice, stoic face, knitted brow with just a hint of a smile.....
