A little background before I rant. I was approved for SSDI back on Nov.28th at my video hearing. My onset date was ammended to Sept 11th 2011, so that puts me on the 5 month waiting period. I applied immediately for and received SSI through my local office with no problems at all. I found out that I now will have Medicaid for a few months until the SSDI kicks in in April. My regular familt doctor has quit practicing medicine due to an illness so I'm hunting for a new family doctor and a pain management doctor.
I've been on the phone all day and as soon as i mention "Medicaid" it's like I've said a foul word. I even inquired about the fact I'll be getting Medicare in the future and was told by all of the offices I spoke with that doctors only like to see medicare recipients that are 65 or older.
I live in West Virginia. Is this a common thing around the country? I feel like I'm being made out to be a second class citizen and that infuriates me! Does anyone wish to share insight or experiences?
I'm interested to see what you all have to say.

gocubsgo-

I can only speak from my state of WI which has a medicaid insurance program called BadgerCare. It started as ins., for uninsured kids and their parents, later expanded to insure anyone without ins., (limited enrollment). I believe there is 1.3 million on the rolls. That being said, here in WI, a person on medicaid is common and no discrimination.

Your old Dr didn't provide any referals? What ins., did you have before? Hate to say it but an emergency room cannot turn you away even if you have no ins.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll find a Dr. eventually.

 I-Agree

Mike is right. I have had Badgercare (Medacaid) for a few years and no discrimination here. I have had two hip replacement surgeries and all together, they cost me $12! I couldn't believe it. We're talking $50,000 per surgery. There would have been no way I could have had those surgeries otherwise, so I am very thankful for the program we have here in WI.

You weren't sent a hand book for Medicaid and Dr.'s that take it? I'm sorry you have to look around and feel discriminated, that really stinks!  Sad  Someone else may be able to assist you further in finding a Dr. that takes your current insurance.  good-luck

Hi,

You can go on the medicaid site for your state and it lists the doctors in your area that accept medicaid.

As for Medicare I have not had any problems at all finding doctors, here in Florida, that are willing to accept it.  My age has never come up at all.  I would be interested if anyone has had a different experience.

My Medicare won't become effective until May, but I already tearfully told my surgeon and neurologist that I was losing my private insurance, and they said "We take Medicare." I was surprised.

I have not looked closely enough at it or started to call around yet to see who takes what, but I'll be happy to share my experience here in CA when I do.

Most of the doctors around here won't take Medicaid. Medicare shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry to hear about your problems with medicaid, as for myself I am on the Breast and cervical cancer program through medicaid and they have paid for everything (mental and physical not related to cancer) Also most Doctors in my area and Birmingham accept it and I am treated very well. My primary sends me to these so maybe he just knows who accepts it. I have not been turned down at any major hospital I've been sent to.
I hope you can find the help you need, if you have regular access to the internet you can search for the type of Doctor you need in and around your area  and check their websites for what ins they take.
Good luck
Emmy

I am currently on Medicaid but got a packet today saying that I will be getting Medicare in June. That kinda freaked me out. I don't pay for any of my medical expenses and and I'm on 10 different meds half of which aren't generic, the meds would normally be around 7000 a month. The only one they won't pay for is my Xanax but I get a discount on that at Walgreens because I have one of their prescription discount cards, they run about 20 a year for membership. I have had no problems finding doctors, I am on Americhoice and when they sent my packet my PC wasn't on there so I freaked out but I called Americhoice and it turned out he was actually on their list. I have been very happy with it so far. I just hope nothing funky happens once I become dual Medicaid/Medicare covered in June.

In Texas, I will be getting Medicare as soon as I get my approval letter since my onset of disability was deemed 7/24/2009.  I can't wait because the doctors don't want to take Medicaid so my only visits have been for pain management maintenance with my neurologist since 6/2010 when my insurance was cancelled.  I have been in limbo, waiting to have two surgeries since then because of the lack of insurance and inability to qualify due to the severe preexisting conditions.

Funny how the insurance companies saw that,  but took till last month for the SSA to figure it out.
