Hi, I'm Bryan,  I'm new to this site and I'm curious if anybody got approved for SSDI and SSI like I supposedly did. So I filed for both SSDI/SSI back in November 2011. I signed releases for my medical records and did all the paperwork they asked me to do. Yesterday I got a phone call from my local social security office and the representative told me that he was from SSI and he said that I was approved for SSDI benefits which I would receive my first SSDI payment in April for $950 and so on every month forward.  Then he asked me a series of personal questions, mostly financial, and then told me that I was also approved for SSI $450 a month in backpay benefits totalling $1800 in ssi backpay for the months of Dec 11' to April 12' which I would receive in April along with the SSDI that kicks in, in April. Does this sound right? After all the horror stories I hear about people trying to get their disability I'm finding it hard to believe. It seems like it's too good to be true for some reason. I'm still waiting for the official document saying I was approved to come in the mail but it hasn't come yet. Has anybody else ever been approved like this before?

Bryan,

Welcome to the site.  You definitely got approved, that is good news.  The only thing I am confused about is the amount of SSI payments you are getting.  Did you receive any type of insurance, workers comp or government assistance during that time that is required to be returned?

Okay so I got a letter in the mail today telling me I'm getting ssdi $950 a month from Nov 1st onward and that my first payment will be recieved in April. I too am still confused about the ssi part though because there wasn't any info in the letter about ssi benefits. I'm very grateful to have been approved for ssdi, I just hope that I'm not going to end up getting ssi backpay instead of ssdi backpay because that would be a lesser amount in backpay. It seems that I was approved for ssdi and they're seeing if I qualify for ssi while I wait for ssdi payments. It seemes like if I  do qualify for ssi that it would off set my ssdi backpay. I hate how they keep you in suspension while waiting to find out whats going on. Unless of course there is no ssdi backpay during the 6 month wait period. I'm not sure how that works exactly, but right now I have no income at all so that might be why they're trying to give me ssi too.

Hi BrYan:

I think I welcomed you in another topic, but in case I didn’t – Welcome. We’re glad to have you. I’ll see if I can help clear up some of the confusion about SSI.

SSI is a needs-based program. It is for disabled individuals who have little to no assets or income and do not have enough work credits for SSDI eligibility. There is no waiting period for SSI, like the 5-month waiting period for SSDI. So, many SSDI beneficiaries are eligible for SSI during the 5-month waiting period. The maximum benefit for SSI was $674 in 2011 and is $698 in 2012. If you have additional income, your SSI benefit is reduced by that amount. The questions Marci asked are because your SSI benefit of $450 is below the maximum, meaning income is counted from somewhere. Another question is – are you married. If so, some of your spouse’s income is “deemed” to your benefit.

You will receive back pay for SSI only. With SSDI there is a 5-month waiting period. Since your onset date is November 1st, the 5-month waiting period ends March 31st, and you are eligible for benefits to begin April 1st. At $450 per month for SSI, the full five-months would actually total $2,250. You are receiving $1,800, which is only 4 months’ back pay. Unlike SSDI, SSI does not pay from the onset date. SSI begins payment the first full month after application. Since you are only receiving 4 months’ back pay, I am guessing you applied after the 1st of November.

So, you will receive SSI back pay. There is no back pay for SSDI. Your benefits begin April 1st. But, you should know you will not receive that payment until May. SSDI always pays one month in arrears. So, you will receive your April payment in May.

I hope that helps clear up some of your confusion. And welcome again.

     Hi Pati,
Thanks for helping to clear up some of that, that info was helpful. I do live with somebody, so when I applied for the ssi, that persons income was factored into the whole thing which makes sense as to why it's set at $450. I also applied for the ssi a few weeks after I applied for ssdi so that also makes sense as to why it's 4 months of backpay vs 5 months worth. I feel like I'm now left in suspense after receiving that phone call from that guy at the local social security office telling me I was approved for both. I'll probably be anxious until I receive the official approval in the mail and have it in my hand. So far the only letter I got in the mail since the phone call was the Privacy Act Statement from SSI. I hope they don't wait to send it to me until the last minute.

You're very welcome bRyan.

Being told you are eligible for both SSI and SSDI can mean SSI during the 5-month waiting period as described earlier.

It can also mean that you are concurrently eligible for both monthly benefits. Do you know yet what your SSDI benefit amount will be? If it is less than $698 you might be eligible for both.

When the SSDI benefit amount is less than the maximum SSI benefit of $698, a person can receive SSI to bring the total benefit up to the maximum SSI benefit. For example, if your SSDI benefit is $500, you may also be eligible to receive $198 from SSI. Even if your wife's income reduces the SSI portion to zero, you are still considered a Concurrent recipient.

That has the advantage of immediate eligibility for Medicaid. SSDI-only beneficiaries must wait 29 months for Medicare. (5 month SSDI wait period plus 24 month Medicare wait period).

they told me my ssdi benefit will $914 so when that kicks in in April i'm guessing the ssi will be cut off, I think the I only qualified for the ssi duirng the wait period because I currently have no income.
