Hey guys,

Been trying to find the answer online but no results. Does my SSDI benefit count as income with regards to SNAP benefits?

Yes.

Here is a IL SNAP calculator:  https://fscalc.dhs.illinois.gov/FSCalc/

If it says no, you might still want to double check.

When this came up for someone in CA recently, if they pay for things directly, then no, the gifts weren't counted.  If they received cash directly, then yes.

It's probably best to just go ahead and fill out an application.

Emergency food (different then SNAP):

Thanks LL

My church pays my landlord directly. I'm already on food stamps - I have a phone interview any minute. I just want to make sure I have everything properly accounted for. That's why I also wanted to know if my SSDI counted as income. I didn't think to report the change in income because when SSDI started, the help from my church stopped, so it was basically even. I wasn't trying to hide anything, but I'm kicking myself now. All I can do is be honest and give them the numbers.  Main17

Did for me in Washington State, had 10 days to report new SSDI income to the state. Lost my food benefits almost immediately, lost health insurance the end of that month. SSDI is considered income for a lot of welfare freebie programs.

Those are the exact numbers I went from - $194/month to $16/month. Time to utilize the food bank.

Remember that per Federal guidelines, disabled persons get certain deductions from their monthly income.  And I believe they only have to meet the NET monthly income limit....not the GROSS limit.

If you spend more than $35 a month on medical expenses you are not reimbursed for, you  can claim the amount over $35 a month. The only income I can think of off hand that does not count is Earned Income Credit because when you work, they go by gross income from wages.

It is Never a good idea to not report changes.  Even if you think it doesn't apply. If you received food stamps you weren't entitled to, you will have to pay the state back.
